RoXy’s Rock Rewind

BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1966 IN COLUMBUS MISSISSIPPI,  ONE OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE SEATTLE GRUNGE MOVEMENT, MOTHER LOVE BONE’S LEAD SINGER AND SONGWRITER ANDREW WOOD. GROWING UP, WOOD WAS EXPOSED TO A TON OF DIFFERENT MUSIC BY HIS PARENTS WHO ALSO SUPPORTED THEIR KIDS WHEN ALL THREE OF THEIR BOYS SHOWED INTEREST IN MUSIC. EARLY ON, HE WAS A FAN AND INFLUENCED BY ARTISTS LIKE ELTON JOHN, QUEEN, AEROSMITH AND KISS AND CO FOUNDED HIS FIRST BAND MALFUNKSHUN WITH HIS BROTHER AT THE AGE OF 14 AND SADLY DEVELOPED A DRUG HABIT AT AN EARLY AGE THAT LED TO HIS FIRST STINT IN REHAB IN 1985. IN 1988 WOOD FORMED MOTHER LOVE BONE…WOOD CHECK HIMSELF INTO REHAB AGAIN IN 1989 IN HOPES TO GET CLEAN FOR THE RELEASE OF THEIR DEBUT ALBUM. ANDREW WOOD’S DEMONS SADLY GOT THE BEST OF HIM AND TOOK HIS LIFE IN MARCH OF 1990 AT THE AGE OF 24 DIED AND MOTHER LOVE BONE’S DEBUT ALBUM WAS RELEASED A YEAR LATER WITH FAVORABLE REVIEWS, EVEN BEING CALLED ONE OF THE FIRST GREAT HARD ROCK RECORDS OF THE 90’S…AFTER HIS DEATH, HIS FRIEND AND FORMER ROOMMATE, CHRIS CORNELL OF SOUNDGARDEN JOINED FORCES WITH FUTURE PEARL JAM  MEMBERS MIKE MCCREADY, MATT CAMERON, STONE GOSSARD, JEFF AMENT AND EDDIE VEDDER TO FORM TEMPLE OF THE DOG, A SEATTLE SUPERGROUP THAT SERVED AS A TRIBUTE TO ANDREW WOOD…TEMPLE OF THE DOG RELEASED ONE SELF TITLED ALBUM IN 1991 WITH THE HIT SINGLE “HUNGERSTRIKE” …IT’S TODAY’S ROXY’S ROCK REWIND ON 105.7 THE X ON WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ANDREW WOOD’S 58TH BIRTHDAY…IF YOUR OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION & SELF HARM, REACH OUT TO MY FRIENDS AT JOLT HARM REDUCTION AT JOLT FOUNDATION DOT ORG
