THE GRAMMY HONORED MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA ALT ROCKERS SOUL ASYLUM OFFICIALLY FORMED IN 1981, BUT WERE INITIALLY CALLED LOUD FAST RULES, CHANGING THEIR NAME TO SOUL ASYLUM IN 1983. THE ORIGINAL LINEUP INCLUDED DAVE PIRNER, KARL MUELLER, PAT MORLEY AND LEAD GUITARIST AND SONGWRITER, TODAY’S BIRTHDAY BOY, DAN MURPHY, BORN IN DULUTH MINNESOTA IN 1962.
IN 1988, MURPHY FORMED THE MINNEAPOLIS SUPERGROUP GOLDEN SMOG, MADE UP OF MEMBERS OF THE REPLACEMENTS, THE JAYHAWKS AND RUN WESTY RUN. ON GOLDEN SMOG’S 2ND ALBUM, MURPHY WAS CREDITED AS ‘DAVID SPEAR’ DUE TO CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS.
IN ’92, MURPHY CONTINUED HIS SUPPORT OF MINNESOTA ROCKERS, APPEARING ON THE DEBUT SOLO ALBUM BY FORMER REPLACEMENTS DRUMMER CHRIS MARS.
IN OCTOBER OF 2012, MURPHY RETIRED FROM SOUL ASYLUM TO FOCUS ON HIS PRIVATE LIFE BUT STARTED WRTING AND RECORDING NEW MUSIC IN 2020 FOR A NEW MUSIC PROJECT CALLED THE SCARLET GOODBYE WITH THEIR DEBUT ALBUM DROPPING IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR.
