I’ve been discussing this latest ‘all time’ list by Gibson Guitars this week, on their web site, they have listed the ‘Top 5 All Time’ Heavy Metal songs of all time. Now, this is a tough chore, as there are loads of amazing, legendary Metal bands in history, this is true. However, when you get to the core of this, there only so many Metal artists that left a lasting impact, and only a certain few that made a massive splash on the world’s stage, and affected the masses immensely. Hence, this list! Now, you can poke holes in this, but this is Gibson’s list. do you agree?
5. Iron Maiden: The Number Of The Beast-Evil, bad ass! Amazing guitar work, and Bruce Dickinson exploding onto the scene with that voice. Maiden is one of the greatest ever.
4. Black Sabbath: Iron Man: Tony Iommi was and is a God of riffs. Dark, gloomy, foreboding, and Ozzy making his first real mark. Where would Metal be without this song, and Sabbath in general? Sabbath were known for their longer songs, but it’s the riffs and the overall dark appeal of this song and band that stood out from just about everyone else in the early 1970’s.
3. Ozzy Osbourne: Crazy Train: Bottom line, this song dominated on it’s release in the early 80’s, and made Randy Rhoades a house-hold name. Randy’s guitar work, wow. Ozzy was far from done, despite the booze and drugs. Great riff, great chorus, and a stand out staple to this day.
2. Motorhead: Ace Of Spades: A fury of guitars, Lemmy’s opening bass riff, a fast paced anthem from hell. Lemmy made his mark, this song has aged incredibly well, and was the nucleus of their sound and attitude. There simply was only one Lemmy Kilmister, and Motorhead. This band influenced millions.
- Metallica: Master Of Puppets: Metallica was already on their way in the 80’s when this was released. They were known for blazing, fast paced riffs, head-banging drums and a tempo from hell. However, this is the song where James Hetfield made his mark, with the chants of “Master! Master!” Dark, evil, bad ass, and this song just sounds amazing to this day, cranked to eleven! Metal would not have been the same without this song, and this song really launched Metallica even further into the world of Metal domination.
